FACEBOOK: Expression and Oppression

FACEBOOK: Expression and Oppression

Facebook: we all use it and are used to it. It has become matter of fact for most of us to share our information and photos on the site with our friends and we think nothing of it. In fact, we all speak the lingo: “Write on my wall”, “comment on my post”, “like it” etc. and this just goes to show how the social network has permeated our internet existences.
So it boils down to this – basically if you are internet savvy, chances are you are on Facebook.  And why not? The site has revolutionized interaction on the web. Ten years ago it was hardly imaginable that one could share videos, writing and thoughts in a web forum and garner such feedback. And Facebook hasn’t only benefited individual expression but helped uncountable businesses advertise.  On the political front, with its groups open and available to anyone around the globe, it has enabled congruence for social and political campaigns and allowed ordinary citizens to take political action. The Jessica Lal case and Delhi’s subsequent India Gate vigils are a case in point.
Facebook has facilitated debate and discussion worldwide. But at what expense?

Recent planned policy changes at Facebook will allow personal data to be passed on to third parties without users’ consent. Each user will have to select an opt-out function, that is, if they are publicly made aware on the site that such a change has occurred.  If not, every one of the four hundred million users may just have to figure it out. While their very personal information is being handed out for commercialism.
We have, perhaps, all thought of personal breach at our inception into Facebook. We have questioned to what extent our own lives should be divulged into the public sphere. We have all formed our own ideas of balance and share information accordingly. But it is likely that unless each one of us diligently monitor our privacy and accounts our private matters will be up for public display.
Facebook has come under much criticism from the German government for this exact reason and has been pressed to revise its privacy policy so users are explicitly informed of their information being distributed. As opposed to Facebook’s earlier plan that all users will be silently implicated in personal disclosing.
So while we may enjoy sharing on the site, do we really want to bare our individual expression to a stranger for examination? When does freedom of expression become freedom of oppression? It is this very debate, at a large scale, that rages on in Pakistan.
Facebook and other social networking sites have been banned in the country by Pakistani authorities following the creation of the Facebook page ‘Everybody Draw Mohammed Day’.  The news, at first seemed blasphemous for expression.  People are being denied access to certain sites and a plentitude of information all riding on one concept and group.
Then, of course, I visited the page. I was shocked, to say the least, at the juvenile derision of the prophet and the Islamic faith. Posts and pictures were outrageously disrespectful and there was none of the imagination and artistry we might hope for after reading the group’s name.  Images were crude and crass and if they communicated any concept at all, it was anti the prophet and anti-Islam.
A few days ago Mumbaiker Muslims expressed their discontent over the same page.  Consequently, the Maharashtra state home department wrote to Union home secretary G K Pillai seeking a ban on the webpage throughout the state.
The debate had hit home. Now it has flickered in the nation. It poses us with questions.
Should an open social networking site be managed and controlled to screen blasphemous content that hurls contempt at a religion? If there is any monitoring of the website, where would it end? If pages and groups are being examined, doesn’t it follow that profiles be checked too? Is privacy breaching of this nature acceptable – be it for censorship or commercialism? Will it not, at the very least, restrict what we post and eventually nullify the whole concept of Facebook’s interactivity and sharing?
The problem with censorship of any kind is that it can know no limits. It is at the discretion, or lack thereof, of the person or board of censorship and individual users’ will lose authorial authority. To share, view, write and read whatever you want, whenever you want is the entire concept of Facebook, the reason it has become such a catching, communicable development. This cannot be taken away.
These controversies, involving curbing the written or spoken word for public-ation, have been raging since time immemorial and will continue to do so with freedom of expression.
We face being capitalized upon, insulted or discriminated against. It is merely the price we have to pay.
So go out there and share what you want. It is your prerogative.

Make a Facebook background

Is it possible to modify your Facebook background

Question:
Cindi asks: I was just wondering if you could make a background for your facebook. If not thats fine. I was just wondering. But if so That AWESOME! Let me know. Thanks.
Answer:
Thanks for your question, Cindi. Imho, one of the strengths of Facebook is the fact they insist on keeping their general profile layout as clean and uniform as they can. That said, they still allow their users to make some degree of graphical customization in their porfiles via applications like Facebook expressions, which allow you to create custom backgrounds or wallpapers that you can use for decorating sections of your Facebook profile but not the entire page (as it is possible on MySpace).

  • Donna Ive been in Dublin nealry5 months,,I worked here when I first got here,,,but work was only temp,,so went on the social,,,they have refused me point blank for any kind of payment, Community Welfare Officers have spoke to me like a piece of dirt an said I can get money to leave the country but they wont give me money to live here,,,I have recently got a skin disease which has been caused by stress,,(due t the lack of help here) and now cant work, I know of a few people who have came into this country from Croatia an Spain and never worked here,,,came here a couple of weeks before me and got paid within for weeks also rent allowance, I have lost 2 stone in weight,,,I havent got anyone here to help me, I have got TD,s and Sinn Fein to help me,,but the goverment are ignoring them too, I find this country a chore to live in,,,I came here to work my backside off, but now I cant get work because of my disease, so I,m left here to starve and not one person in this govermet gives two hoots,,,,,they are quick enough to take tax and insurance of us but are reall slow to help anyone,,,,why is it that one person gets something and another doesnt,,,I,m Scottish an have been on the Social 3 times in my life,,,I moved to Portugal and worked 3 jobs there,,,and was there for 9 years,,,bringing up my 4 sons without help from anyone,,,,and yet people that have been on the Social for all their lives get better treated,,,,it makes you wonder why these people are in the goverment, if they are treating decent hard working people like lepers, they want to stop spending money on holidays and cars an houses for themselves and do what there meant to do,,,,help the country,,,,why oh why do people let these ignorant goverment workers get away with it,,,I have now gone to a lawyer an the papers about my story,,,,if I dont people will get treated like me,,,and there is no way I,m letting them away with it,,,,I didnt come into this country to be spoke to like a dog,,,,I,m a human being,,,,and if one person can get everything, why cant another,,,,if its the law,,,then all people should be treated the same,,,,no wonder there is racism in Ireland an Britain,,,,cos the goverments all over,,,,treat people differently, and its about someone said something.

  • Chris Unbelievable. Ireland and the UK have a Common Travel Area agreement which is taken into account for SW purposes, and if you can show that your "centre of interest" has transferred to Ireland and you no longer have any "interest" in the UK you should have no problem qualifying. What if you move to the UK and they say that you aren't entitled to payments there either? Just a reminder, the Health Service Exec administers disability, I don't think you should go for that, jobseekers allowance is administered by the SW crowd, and you probably qualify for that, anyway it sounds like its been going on a while, at the minute there's no recruitment going on, no one is getting new payments from the government, and everyone is hunkering down and trying to protect their lot.

  • Donna Hi Chris thanks for writing back,,,,

I recieved a letter after writing this,,,,saying I,m being refused again,,,,so went down to local social welfare office,,,they have now opened anew benefit for me,,,dont ask me what as I havent a clue,,,,they have to now write to Portugal for my contributions again,,,,as they lost all my forms from th first time I handed them in ,,which was 3 months ago,,,they have told me it more weeks,,,,in the meantime I could apply for Community Welfare Payment,,,,so I did,,,and they said no way am I getting anything,,,so as far as I can see ,,,,this place can leave people starving,,,,dont think the UK would do that,,,,well they dont I know that,,,as there wouldnt be so many people coming into the country if they didnt help people..

I know of some nigerian peope,,,(good luck to them I say) who went in to the social here and handed in every form of benefit that there entitled to and got paid within4 weeks,,,,so its not true that people arent getting any money,,,,coz they are,,,,I also know a friends mother who has just quit her job in the social as she was told to put all foreigners claims to the top,,and the rest to the bottom of the queue,,,,I dont have a problem with anyone from any country,,,as I,m the same as them,,,,what i do have a problem with is,,,,treating people differently,,,especially there own peope,,,(which I,m not),racism in these countries,,,,its the goverments that are causing it.

So I,m to wait more time now because of their mistake,,,I have been told to go to the papers and let eveyone know what the are doing to people,,,,I have paid tax all my life and wanted to come to Ireland to work as the work in portugal has gone now,,,,but i,m begining to think it was the worst move I have eve rmade,,,what keeps me here is the people of Ireland,,,,(not the ones who work for goverment,,,,there the most selfish and arrogant people I have ever met in my life,,,,they obviously have an o level in talking to people like dirt,,,,I wouldnt talk to a dog they way Ive been spoken to me,,,but what goes round comes round,,,,one day those same people might be in my situation,,,,I can only hope...),,,they are good people here and I enjoy there company,,,but I can only wait and see what happens now....

once again thanks Chris for you info xx

‘Help for the police community and their families is our motive’ said Brinda Das who is the daughter of Mohan Das, former Director General of Police and one of the founders of Bforce a non-profit organization that was started in the year 2007.

In a chat with Brinda she explained ‘We four sisters grew up seeing our father so much as a passionate and service minded policeman. Since the time he passed away in the year 2000 we have been trying to reach out to some social cause in his memory. Our mother Shantha Mohan Das was also very socially conscious and involved in a lot of activities; she succumbed to cancer in the year 2001. We thought that we should form a Trust so that more people in Tamil Nadu are benefitted and decided to take it up systematically. My sisters Bina, Bindu, Biju and I started Bforce to help policemen and their families to treat victims of cancer but we also extend help to other spheres of life like education and employment’.

Brinda went on to add that they first organized health camps in four districts of Tamil Nadu for policemen families. They had a panel of doctors who were specialists in different fields of medicine like cardiology, gynaecology, etc... Basic medication was provided in the camps itself and if there was a need, further tests were taken and treatment was provided. Several families of policemen received medical help through these camps.

Bforce is now in the third year of their operations and for this year they are planning a job mela. Candidates would be sons and daughters of policemen and several MNCs would participate to recruit suitable candidates.

I asked Brinda how she managed her work and the time to get involved with the activities of Bforce and she answered ‘My three sisters are professionals but somehow all of us find the time to work for Bforce because we are motivated by the cause. We are very well supported by our families. We have about 15 volunteers who work on our projects and we have several well wishers who donate funds for the various activities. We also conduct fund raising events periodically’.

‘B’ stands for the first letter of the names of the four sisters and they will aid the police force which provides security to the common man to face some of their personal challenges like medical attention, education and employment for family members. Mohan Das and Shantha Mohan Das have infused social awareness in their daughters and left in them a spirit of service that has taken birth as Bforce and resulted in a concrete form to help the society by reaching out to the police personnel and their families.
